Welcome to our new venture. My name is Bonnie, and I am proud to introduce you to my husband and artist, Rik Larson.
Our company, Distinctive Designs, was created from our desire to dramatically change the course of our lives and live our passion. (The fact we turned 50 may have had something to do with this.) Rik began two careers in the '70s. The first was his college career which he paid for by creating beautiful and functional ceramics. Through numerous art shows and personal selling, Rik managed to not only pay for college, but to also pay for the education for his second career - paramedicine. For the next 25 years, Rik "threw pots" and saved lives. The art gave him a venue from which he could cope with others' pain, injury, and grief. Serving others is always what Rik has loved to do. Through his medical career, he's been able to provide relief from pain, teach other professionals skills to help patients, and to lead various medical clinics that offered loving care for hurt and suffering individuals and families.
What drives us
The medical field has changed in all these years putting us in a “crossroads.” We decided to apply our energy to an area where we can still serve others offering art forms that “heal” your mind with visual manipulations such as texture, flow, and simple beauty. Each item that will grace your home or a friend’s office comes from nature – a combination of woods, earth, fire and water that is persuaded by Rik’s hands and suggested into a form that becomes a true work of art.
As in the medical field, the days can be long, but at least now, when they stretch into the wee hours, we feel it applies directly to sharing our gifts and talents with you. In fact, I began this page at 3am! However, that's when I felt inspired rather than compelled. As a result of our decision, Rik no longer creates functional ceramics such as bowls and platters. But, he is making originally-designed ceramic molds for his kiln-formed glasswork. So, you can expect every glass artifact to be definitely one-of-a-kind from design to finish!
More exciting products are always emerging from his artistic instincts, so we'll enhance our inventory frequently. Please pay us a visit as often as you can.
Our Hope
Browse our site at your leisure and soak in the elegance and serenity of glass and wood.
